10 Mid-Century Modern Furniture Pieces Every Collector Needs

7 July, 2026

Mid-century modern design never goes out of style. Born from the post-war optimism of the 1940s through the 1960s, this movement produced furniture that remains as compelling today as the day it was conceived – clean lines, organic curves, honest materials, and an unwavering belief that beautiful design belongs in everyday life.

At Euro Creations, a coveted destination for world-renowned Italian furniture in Bangkok, we present three of the most important names in mid-century modern heritage: Cassina, Molteni&C, and Poltrona Frau.

For collectors and homeowners searching for authentic mid-century modern design in Bangkok, these pieces represent some of the most important works in Italian design history.

What Is Mid-Century Modern Design?

Mid-century modern (MCM) is an architectural and interior design movement that flourished roughly between 1945 and 1975. It emerged from a generation of designers who believed that the post-war world deserved beautiful, accessible, and intelligently made objects. Its defining characteristics:

Clean, uncluttered lines - every element earns its place; nothing is decorative for decoration's sake.

Organic and geometric forms - curves inspired by nature; angles borrowed from modernist abstraction.

Honest materials - solid wood, genuine leather, chrome, and woven textiles presented as they are, not disguised or over-finished.

Functionality as beauty - the idea that a well-designed object, perfectly suited to its purpose, is inherently beautiful.

Italian designers - particularly those working in Milan during the 1950s and 1960s - brought warmth, craftsmanship, and cultural richness to these principles. The result is a body of furniture that feels simultaneously intellectual and deeply liveable. The ten pieces below are among the finest expressions of that tradition.

10 Mid-Century Modern Furniture Pieces Worth Owning

1. Cassina Maralunga Sofa by Vico Magistretti

The Maralunga sofa by Cassina, a mid-century modern sofa that won Italy's highest design honor, and still earns it today.

Vico Magistretti designed the Maralunga sofa for Cassina in 1973, and it immediately changed what a sofa could be. Its defining innovation: a backrest that adjusts independently, rising to support your head when you lean back, disappearing when you want a lower, sleeker profile. The same soft architecture applies to the armrests.

The encapsulation of design brilliance, business insight and made-in-Italy artisan craftsmanship, this sofa is an international bestseller steeped in timeless beauty and functionality.

Widely regarded as one of the finest examples of a mid-century modern sofa, the Maralunga's rounded forms and softly tufted upholstery bring warmth to a Bangkok interior defined by strong architectural lines. Choose it in deep cognac leather for a room with dark wood floors, or in a warm bouclé for a lighter, more contemporary space.

2. Cassina 1 Reclining Chair by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand

The iconic Le Corbusier that redefined what sitting could mean.

A chair with a timeless design that draws upon colonial styles for inspiration. Light weight and compact, the timeless shape of Fauteuil dossier basculant was introduced in 1929 at the Salon d’Automne along with other iconic pieces like Fauteuils Grand Confort, petit modèle and grand modèle, la Table tube d’avion and Chaise longue à reglage continu.

Lightweight and compact, the 1 Reclining Chair works as beautifully as an accent chair in a living room as it does at a desk or beside a dining table. In 1965, Cassina acquired the exclusive worldwide license to manufacture Le Corbusier's designs - a partnership that has ensured these pieces remain in production, unchanged in character, for over six decades.

Place the 1 Reclining Chair in a reading corner beside a floor lamp and a stack of design books. It is a chair that signals intention - that the person who chose it understands something about the history of the room they are creating.

3. Cassina 2 Armchair by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand

The armchair that became the archetype of modern comfort.

A timeless style that has written its own chapter in design history, becoming an icon of global fame. Perfect today in any residential or contract setting.

Designed for ease of conversation, this Le Corbusier  was exhibited in 1929 at the Salon d'Automne in Paris as the archetype of the modern concept in furnishings. Le Corbusier called his furniture "household equipment", a deliberately provocative phrase that captured his belief that a chair should serve the body as efficiently as a machine serves its function. The 2 Armchair does exactly that, while remaining one of the most visually powerful objects ever placed in a room.

4: Cassina 4 Chaise Longue by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand

The "relaxing machine" — one of the most iconic objects of the twentieth century.

Iconic, original, ageless. Created in 1928 and exhibited at the Paris Salon d’Automne in 1929, 4 Chaise longue à reglage continu embodies the relationship between form and function in the balance between design purity and comfort.

In a mid-century modern home, the 4 Chaise Longue functions as both a piece of furniture and a work of art. Placed in a bedroom or a quiet corner of the living room, it transforms the space around it - an object so assured of its own logic that no further decoration is required.

5: Cassina CAB Chair by Mario Bellini

The world's first free-standing cowhide chair - and one of the most original objects in Italian design.

Cab is the world’s first free-standing cowhide design chair, informed by the relationship between the skeleton and the skin; an authentic example of production excellence that requires multiple stages of artisan workmanship to create a trendy tailored-to-fit object.

The Cab works across almost every context: as a dining chair, an accent chair in a study, a standalone statement in an entrance hall. In a room of strong geometric furniture.

6. Molteni&C D.154.2 Armchair by Gio Ponti

The shell chair born in Caracas - a Wallpaper Design Award winner.

In 1954, Gio Ponti designed this armchair for the Villa Planchart in Caracas — one of his most celebrated architectural projects. D.154.2 was reissued by Molteni&C in 2015. Faithful to the original, enveloping shape, the re-edition of Gio Ponti’s iconic design is like a cosy shell, has a rigid polyurethane frame, a soft polyurethane counter-frame and a cushion, and is upholstered in the Molteni&C textile range, with the option of differentiating the three component parts.

A pair of D.154.2 armchairs positioned facing each other in a living room creates one of the most refined compositions available in contemporary Italian furniture Bangkok has to offer. Choose a rich velvet in an unexpected color - this is a design confident enough to carry it.

7. Molteni&C Monk chair by Afra & Tobia Scarpa

A history-making design, reborn in 2025 as part of the Heritage Collection.

A history-making 1973 design by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni&C, Monk reemerges in 2025 with this exclusive re-edition, part of the Heritage Collection.

The name “Monk” reflects the almost monastic simplicity of the style, while also leading with the letter “M,” as Afra and Tobia Scarpa were wont to do for the designs they created for Molteni&C.

In a mid-century modern interior, the Monk brings a quality of quiet authority. Pair it with the Gio Ponti D.154.2 for a room built entirely around Molteni&C's extraordinary archive of Italian design history.

8. Molteni&C Round D.154.5 Armchair by Gio Ponti

Presented at the XI Milan Triennale - a collector's piece of extraordinary rarity.

The iconic Round D.154.5 designed by Gio Ponti has very modern shapes, almost out of this world, which had never been thought of before.

The early 1950s marked a turning point in Gio Ponti’s furniture designs, towards highly innovative solutions linked to functional and essential shapes: the end of the Second World War, with the desire to restart and rebuild a modern world full of novelties, thus moving away from the past; the availability of innovative materials, which made it possible to conceive objects that were previously unfeasible.

This is the piece for the collector who understands that truly great design is not common - and is not meant to be. Place it as a singular statement in a room otherwise kept intentionally simple.

9. Molteni&C D.157.6 Due Foglie Sofa

The Heritage Collection centerpiece of 2024 - named for the two leaves of its form.

D.157.6 Due Foglie Sofa takes inspiration from Ponti’s stunning design for Villa Planchart in Caracas, commissioned in 1954 by Anala and Armando Planchart, ardent admirers of Ponti’s diverse talents. The sofa, one of the villa's iconic features, now takes center stage in the 2024 Collection under the name D.157.6, its current title in the Gio Ponti Archive.

Pair the Due Foglie with the Round D.154.5 armchair for a room that reads as an immersive survey of Gio Ponti's finest residential designs, a pairing that exemplifies the very best of mid-century modern design.

dezza-24-armchair

10. Poltrona Frau Dezza Armchair by Gio Ponti

Named after the street where Ponti built his final home. A masterpiece of late mid-century Italian design.

Designed in 1965, the Dezza armchair embodies some of Gio Ponti’s most important design principles from both a formal perspective - like the leg with its characteristic tapered triangular cross-section - and a methodological standpoint, due to its innovative modular setup with a small number of components for assembly. The Dezza sofa and armchairs, comfortable, light and very versatile, are reissued in a refined new edition that exalts their formal beauty and unique style.
